The place

The Postal Museum in London tells the story of Mail Rail — the hidden underground railway that carried the nation's post beneath the city from 1927 until its closure in 2003. Today, visitors ride its miniature electric trains through the original tunnels.

The brief

Ahead of the railway's 2027 centenary, The Postal Museum set out to refresh the entire Mail Rail experience — replacing and upgrading the original projection systems across the Eastbound and Westbound platforms and the new Mail Rail Explorer, and tying every space together under a single, reliable show-control platform that could also make the attraction accessible to everyone.

The project

Working alongside design studio ISO, system integrator DJW chose PIXILAB Blocks to tie the whole attraction together. Blocks now drives the central show control — triggering and synchronising the audiovisual shows across every space and delivering visuals and audio along the track, plus an accessible multimedia guide with British Sign Language and subtitles. A mirrored server keeps everything running reliably all day, while the museum's own team can adapt scheduling and content for special events without specialist help.

“We've been absolutely delighted with PIXILAB Blocks, providing precise control over lighting, video, projections, on-site signage and audio effects – all synchronised with a mobile visitor guide providing sign language and subtitles for accessibility. The amount of control and flexibility this system enables is simply breathtaking.”
